Recently Business Insider, published a report with 40 Big Tech predictions for 2019 and made the following top 5 for FinTech.

  1. Regulations will tighten in the UK as a result number of market place lenders will shutdown
  2. There will be a number of FitTech related IPOs in 2019. RobinHood, the US commission free trading app will be one of the main one
  3. Existing established financial institutions will collaborate more extensively with upcoming FinTech
  4. Finally, a digital only bank will become operational on the US market
  5. Blockchain adoption will intensify by existing financial institutions

Personally, not sure how fast the UK financial regulation can change in 2019, given the current BREXIT deadlock. When it comes to IPOs in 2019, conditions seems to be favorable to the tech sector in general so will not be surprised even bigger IPOs to happen, like the SoftBank vision 100 bln fund for example. The third point is really interesting prediction. The reason is that there is a huge cultural gap between fintechs and traditional financial institutions. As a result, in my view collaboration can be a significant challenge. On the fifth point – blockchain, I think that ICO activity will decrease significantly, and that financial institutions will start testing perhaps some forms of blockchain technology, however this will be mainly “buzz” to keep with the trend. In my view blockchain technology is still far away from main stream.
