” Health is our greatest wealth ” – Unknown
Building a business is often a daunting task. As many can imagine often both long and smartly spend hours are required. Often travelling from one place to another or even one country to another is a must, especially in larger companies. I have been in a travelling job for a number of years now. There are many observations and practices that I have collected over the years. I think some of them are worth sharing. Lets start with the fact that when you work hard and travel a lot you need to be honest with your self and recognize that this will eventually and surely take a toll on your health, should decide to ignore the situation.
Keeping hydrated is the first one I can think of. Especially when we fly. While flying, the artificially created cabin pressure pushes our bodies to dehydrate faster. The solution to that challenge is to stay hydrated. It is important to keep drinking water and if possibly avoid alcoholic as well as fizzy sugary drinks. Avoiding saturated animal fat in your food intake before and during flights also helps. The same applies to caffeine rich drinks.
While travelling to negotiate significant deals time zones are often changed. This automatically means that our sleep pattern is disturbed even when the time difference we face is just an hour. Out of my experience it seems that best practice is just cope with the new time zone the first day. Try to go to sleep earlier or later if needed depending on the direction where you travel, make sure you put even 2 or 3 alarms if needed so you wake up on time. Also, what i tend to do is trying to have a power nap .
We also tend to neglect our sport routine while travelling. There are many reasons and excuses for that. After six years of constant travelling ( 50+ flights a year) and 90+ days staying in a hotel abroad, I can say that keeping your routine and working out at least 3 times for sixty minutes every week as well as to keep walking as much as possible. The American heart association recommends to walk at least 10 000 steps every day.
Out of my experience, I have just listed very simple basics to follow while constantly travelling so that you can maintain your health and achieve peak performance. As with everything, doing and executing comes well before thinking of doing something or even reading this or any other article. Having a routine and making sure you keep it as much as you can is key. Don’t to tell me what are you thinking of this article and please share what are your basics on keeping fit while travelling.
